The Hidden Jesus
“Find your own Calcutta. Find the sick, the suffering, and the lonely, right where you are — in your own homes and in your own families, in homes and in your workplaces and in your schools. You can find Calcutta all over the world, if you have eyes to see. Everywhere, wherever you go, you find people who are unwanted, unloved, uncared for, just rejected by society — completely forgotten, completely left alone.”
– Mother Teresa
Have you ever been on a mission trip? Chances are, if you have, that you went to a different state or even a different country.
On today’s EquipCast, I talk with Hope of the Poor. While they do have a ministry to the poor in Mexico, their mission is first to evangelize. Yes, they bring Jesus to the poor that they serve, but more than that, they also help the Americans that they bring to Mexico to see Jesus in the distressing disguise of the poor.
The goal is then to help these same Americans find a mission field in their own backyard.
When the global pandemic hit, Hope of the Poor took their own advice. They went to the poor in Omaha. They found that our poor have most of their needs taken care of, and so they set up a coffee stand on the way to the Sienna Francis House. The services they offer (no matter what material goods they show up with) is first and foremost an excuse to hang out with the poor, to talk, hear stories, share the gospel, and pray with them.
Tune in for stories of real transformed lives.
